The Looking Glass allows you to visualize traffic routing.
This visibility helps you troubleshoot connectivity issues by displaying the status of protocols and routing tables.
With multiple routing systems, and in particular with the standard Internet protocol, BGP, a given router only has a partial view of the network. What your router sees is not necessarily what other routers will see.
To debug routing issues, it is therefore often useful to have a view of other network operators' routers.
This is achieved through looking glasses, which are mechanisms that allow you to view the state of a remote router, even one managed by another operator.
