ST Digital Datacenter: Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) as an indicator for measuring energy efficiency
ST DIGITAL, Fabrice ADZRAKOU

WHAT IS PUE?

Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) is an indicator developed by the Green Grid to measure the energy efficiency of a data center. It is calculated by dividing the total energy consumed by the data center by the total energy used by IT equipment (servers, storage, network). For example, French data centers have an average PUE of 2.5, meaning that for every 1 Watt consumed by IT equipment, 2.5 Watts are required at the data center input.

PUE (Power Usage Effectiveness) has today established itself as a universally recognized technical indicator for measuring the energy efficiency of data centers.

It has become a benchmark for "eco-responsible" computing.

RESPONSIBLE PRACTICES
With the adoption of cloud computing, global IT infrastructure is massively shifting into data centres, which now account for a very significant share of the energy footprint of the digital economy. They have become more than ever critical and vital infrastructures, where the slightest failure leads to disastrous consequences and a tangible impact on the economy.

At ST DIGITAL, we work daily to improve the efficiency of our data centre. For example, modern servers can sustain a constant temperature of 30°C (in accordance with ASHRAE standards), and we have therefore chosen to adjust our operating temperatures accordingly, rather than the conventional setpoint of 20°C.

Energy performance is a genuine challenge for us as a datacenter operator in the context of an energy crisis that manifests itself in numerous supply interruptions following ongoing issues affecting both generation assets and the transmission and distribution network.

The environmental responsibility of our industry must rest on 2 inseparable pillars: datacenter efficiency and energy supply.

Measurement carried out according to ISO/IEC 30134-2:2016 standard
