From 6 to 11 February 2025, Paris became the world capital of artificial intelligence (AI), hosting the Summit for Action on Artificial Intelligence (SAIA). This international event brought together experts, decision-makers and representatives from more than 100 countries, with the objective of promoting ethical, inclusive AI in the service of the common good.
A Conducive Context for International Cooperation
The SAIA is part of a series of global summits dedicated to
AI, following the meetings at Bletchley Park in November 2023 and
Seoul in May 2024. These events highlighted the need for international
collaboration to govern the rapid development of AI and
address the ethical, environmental, and societal challenges it raises.
Objectives and stakes of the summit
The SAIA aimed to establish solid scientific foundations,
concrete solutions, and standards for sustainable AI, working towards collective
progress and the public interest. Discussions focused on the safety,
reliability, and ethics of AI, in order to ensure that this technology
benefits society as a whole.
SAIA Highlights
Among the highlights of the summit, the creation of the Current AI
foundation was announced, with a mission to promote responsible
and transparent AI. Furthermore, 61 countries, along with the European Union and the
African Union Commission, signed a joint statement in favour of an
open, inclusive, and ethical AI. However, it should be noted that the United States
and the United Kingdom chose not to associate themselves with this initiative.
France and India at the helm of the summit
Co-chaired by France and India, the SAIA highlighted the willingness of these two nations to play a major role in the regulation and development of AI in the service of humanity. France, in particular, reaffirmed its ambition to become a European leader in ethical and responsible AI.
Towards AI in the Service of the Common Good
The Summit for Action on Artificial Intelligence marked
a crucial milestone in the international mobilisation for ethical and
sustainable AI. The commitments made at this event reflect a collective
willingness to govern the development of AI so that it benefits everyone,
while minimising the risks associated with its use.
By bringing together stakeholders from around the world on the issue of artificial intelligence, Paris demonstrated the importance of international cooperation in addressing the technological challenges of our time. The SAIA represents a significant step towards responsible AI, placing ethics and the common good at the heart of its concerns.
